Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Explain why we're here: we are consultants working on improving the categorization and classification of material for the intranet, establish our credentials (mini-bios), and tell interviewee how their feedback helps shape our recommendations
  • Exchange business cards / contact information
  • We can't promise any specific changes will be implemented based on our discussion today.
  • We will pass on appropriate comments anonymously.
  • Interview will take no longer than one hour.
  • While we have a set of prepared questions, please feel free to cover any information that you think is important.
  • Does interviewee have any questions?

Background (15 MINUTES)

  • How many years have you been in your current position?
  • How many years have you been with the company?
  • What are your job responsibilities?
  • What does your part of the company do? (team, group, others you work with most closely)
  • Do you, personally, use the employee portal? If so, for what kinds of things?
  • How do you like the portal?

Business Context (15 minutes)

  • In your opinion, what are the factors that will most affect the company's success over the next two years?
  • What are the key challenges that the company faces now?
  • What are the business and product strategies for your part of the organization?
  • How does the employee portal fit into your strategic plans?
  • What are the key challenges and obstacles that the employee portal faces now?
  • Are there any other knowledge management projects that the company is undertaking or considering, in addition to the intranet project?


Vision for the Company (20 minutes)

For the next set of questions, we would like to ask you to forget current limitations, such as what may or may not be feasible to implement now and consider even revolutionary ideas.

  • In your view, what should the purpose of the employee portal be?
  • Describe your high-level goals for the intranet.
  • How do you see the portal fitting into employee training and retention?
  • What would the portal's role be in knowledge management for the company?
  • How would you involve employees more in the portal?
  • How would you measure the success of the employee portal?
  • What enterprise-wide initiatives are occurring that should be considered when developing and growing the portal?

Wrap up (5 minutes)

  • What, in your opinion, are the top 3 priorities for improving the employee portal?
  • Is there anything we haven't covered today that we should?
